ENGLISH BIO
Ambroise is the song project of Eugénie Jobin, carried for many years now by Frédérique Roy, Simon Labbé and Gabriel Drolet. The music they create together is informed by their involvement in the experimental, improvised and new music scenes, and comes from a shared desire to explore the creative and expressive potentential that emerges from songs when they are in contact with more adventurous types of music. Ambroise’s songs are wide, free; they make sure to avoid the genre’s many codes and conventions, to trace its limits without ever completely walking away from it. The ensemble regularly performs in Montreal and Toronto, and has already recorded two EPs (Ambroise and Anémone). À la tonalité préférable du ciel, the result of two years of working with quebecois poet Paul-Marie Lapointe’s words, is the group’s first full-lenght album. The collection of nine poems set to music by Eugénie will be relased in November 2018 on the french label Wild Silence

Review by Rowan Coupland :

Ambroise are a four piece from Montreal centred around the voice and writing of Eugénie Jobin. Their record À la tonalité préférable du ciel (at the preferable tonality of the sky), based on poems by the quebecois poet Paul-Marie Lapointe, begins with a languid hush of rolling guitars, a mixed soft squish of descending chords, fret noise and thrumming tranquil vocals sung in perfect harmony. It’s music full of pause and dwell, at points dwindling to nothing and then returning to something else. The lyrics are sung clear and airy, sweet and plaintive at the same time. It’s harmonious and wonderful, and yet also contains elements that are ‘off’: disharmonious, uncomfortable and unsettled. The resolutions feel more deserved when they arrive.

Vocal harmonies linger a moment longer than expected; at points are exactly synchronous, at others stepping just enough out of line to be noticeable. Wood creaks in the background. It feels homey. Walking round the city listening to the record through headphones, a high pitched buzzsaw works in the middle distance and for some steps it is plausible that it forms part of the music. Nothing is too neat, nothing is divorced from it having been made in a living moment. L’espace de vivre 1, beginning with traffic noise and Jobin’s light melodic humming before a piano enters to render it more expressly composed, goes some way to excusing my confusion.

To an extent the record could be compared to the work of Kath Bloom and Loren Mazzacane Connors, melding sweetness, wistfulness, and uncomfortable elements threaded through the hole of experimental contemporary music. The soft and minimal collaboration of fellow Canadian Julie Doiron with Mount Eerie and Fred Squire, Lost Wisdom, could be another kindred record; both contain close hushed harmonising and an emphasis on space and pause.

Indeed, this record is quite defined by the moments of silence when nothing explicitly happens. An organ plays an ostinato. It stops. It plays again; it stops. One can almost imagine Jobin and her collaborators standing on a beach, playing only when the waves roll in and lapsing into silence when the water recedes. It also reaches the levels of calm and peace that one can find alone with the sea, as well as the disquiet when one encounters a seagull carcass amid the surf. Jobin sings of ‘the roughest kiss’ and ‘the assassin without a blade’, all sweetness, and then veers off ‘mais la corrosion….’, hitting a note of discord for once before returning to consonance. Everything gets resolved in a sense, but this record never feels settled. It’s never showy, it’s never self-consciously fancy in its playing; it doesn’t seem radical on the surface, but throughout it makes exciting choices in its quest to make pointed, calm, lyrical and inventive music. A triumphant hush of an album.
